Default 45 star flag used in battle?

I received this flag from my grandfather who was going to throw it in the trash since he felt it was in too poor condition for any use. I researched the flag, much on this site, and I know it is the 1896-1908 flag. However, it seems to have interesting "wear"- specifically a hole that seems to have been burned through as if it was hit by a hot object. It also has strange fish-eye hooks installed as if it was always hung from the top and not on a pole. My grandfather said it was in the basement of the house when he bought it and knew nothing of the prior owner's status of being a veteran. How can I tell what flag this was- ie: used in battle, military issue, etc? Also- what is the appropriate action with a flag like this? Repair it, clean it, frame it as is? Thanks much.

might be something with being a new member, the filters even catch us long time users occasionally. You can thank some abuse the site has taken over the years.

    Hi, Kurtis and all,

All members should be able to post photos. The forum software sometimes flags new members' posts and sends them to moderation, but that's OK -- I usually clear the moderation queue at least once a day. There is a thread here:

How to include a photo in your posts

That explains how to post photos. Note that you may have to resize them because the forum has some limits on file sizes of attachments.
