| When Mr. Lincoln first took office there where only 33 stars on the American Flag. Later that year, 1861; with the edition of Kansas as a state the number changed to 34. In 1863 West Virginia was admitted to the Union bringing the total of stars on the American Flag to 35. In 1865 Nevada was accepted as a state but Mr. Lincoln died prior to any change, however that year the number did become 36. I suppose you would have to know the date inside of his term of office to be able to say exactly how many and when but it is fair to say that the Union grew in number considerably during his administration and so did the number of stars.

| There were 33 stars when Lincoln was elected November 6th 1860. He took the oath of office in March 1861. Kansas became a state Jan 29th 1861. It's star would not have been added to the flag until July 4th 1862. July 4th is when stars are added to the official flag per the act of April 4th 1818 which provided for 13 stripes and one star per state to be added to the flag on the 4th of July following the year of admission. www.si.edu/resource/faq/nmah/flag.htm
