That's not something to brag about, it's a sign of the decline of morality, just like bad language and nudity on your TV's sponsored by your government.

Then You wonder why you don't stand outside and stare at your flag.

Don't get US Americans wrong either, even though we are seeing the same decline in morality and financial problems, the majority of Americans still Want a Moral and Just lifestyle, and a majority of us still go to church.

I don't think that not attending church is a sign of declining morality! People can be moral without being religious! I am an atheist and I don't see anything wrong with it.

Ladies and Gentlemen, PLEASE! This is NOT, as I see it, a site for Americans, Brits, etc. but for PATRIOTS! (Paraphrase follows) "You can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please all the people all the time". Each nation, state, town, village, etc. has good as well as the bad. Governments try to do, through laws, the most good for the most people. It can't be right for everyone. That's why governments have Constitutions and Charters, allowing changes as conditions warrant. Everyone everywhere has pride in where they live, otherwise why would they stay there? The USA is a young nation, by world standards, and we have a lot to learn. But we have tried, in our short existence, to do the right thing and set an example for others to follow, most of the time. That is why there is such a reverence for the national flag and what it represents. Just my opinion.

And it is primarily a site for discussion of flags. While patriotism is inextricably linked to flags, it is secondary in our focus on flags.

Regarding the links between the US and the UK, our respective ensigns tell it all: the US Stars and Stripes is simply a modified British Red Ensign. Both flags have a Union in the canton that enumerates our component parts: 3 crosses in in the UK's flag and 50 stars in the US's flag. The field of our 'red ensign' adds 6 white stripes to show separation from the UK, thus creating 13 stripes emblematic of our original united colonies.

Speaking of 13 original colonies, let me get off tangent by asking some questions about our first states:
1. What is the longest US state name?
2. What colony changed its name before it became a state?
3. What was the northernmost colony/state until 1820?
4. Which two state capitals were also National capitols at some point in their history?

As Nick pointed out, patriotism and flags are inextricably linked. It's fine to discuss patriotism here, and we have had some great discussions about what patriotism means to us and how our ideas about it might differ from those of other nations.

The ground rules, however, are that we respect the view of others and avoid partisan ranting and name-calling. There are plenty of other places on the internet where folks can indulge in that kind of thing, and it's not welcome here. We've had to close several threads, and even delete some posts that violated that rule, and we'll continue to do that. My sense is that most of the forum members support this policy, and it's what we'll continue to do while I'm Admin-ing.

Just by the by, it's very interesting that we always see a big spike in logons each year on 9/11. It will be interesting to see if this pattern continues tomorrow.

Best to all,

Peter Ansoff

My post to Rockdude UK was only in answer to the non-flag related unflattering comments he made about Americans and the US in general. I realize they were non-flag related, but I'm new to the site and I thought the posts were reviewed before they were displayed. Even the administrator had non-flag related comment to the UK post. But then, posts later, it is made out like I'm the bad guy. And then others continue with State trivia questions (flag-related?). What have I done wrong?

Hi, armoryhistorian!

You have not done anything wrong, and I humbly apologize if I gave you or anyone that impression. The only reason for my post was to clarify that rational discussion of patriotism (like your post) is perfectly in order here. We're glad that you found us, and hope that you enjoy participating in the forum.

Best regards,

You sound like Charles Dickens and Winston Churchill- 2 Brits that didn’t have a clue about American geography. Dickens once visited the U.S. got as far as a day’s drive out of St. Louis, sank into some mud and assumed that he had seen the whole of the American West. And Churchill didn’t seem to understand the role that U.S. geography played in the Rebellion; his American ancestry was completely wasted on him.

My understanding is that you Brits didn’t have a 24-hour news channel until about the time Diana was killed with her lover (CNN over here started around 1980); so why’d you bother to stay up past 9pm before then?
