| Massachusetts? Quote:
Rhode Island used to be Rhode Island and Providence Plantation; it is designated as such in Article I of the U.S. Constitution, but I don’t know when the Providence Plantation part was first left off. Quote:
Massachusetts in that what is now the state of Maine was part of Massachusetts until the Missouri Compromise. Maine was admitted as a free state to balance Missouri, which was admitted as a slave state. Quote:
Trick question. The Constitution only recognizes Washington, D.C. as the U.S. seat of government so WashingtonD.C. has been the only official capital of the U.S. under the Constitution. But Philadelphia served as the de facto U.S. capitol during the Revolutionary War and Confederation period. Then the U.S. federal government met in New York City before moving to Philadelphia and then Washington, D.C.

| . Hi, Flja ! QUOTE : "I know, but it's never too late to confront ignorance from abroad." Maybe, Maybe Not. But what good can come from repeatedly and un-necessarily "Beating A Dead Horse" after others have already addressed the original entries in this thread ??? Robin Hickman Eugene, Oregon

I have posted in 3 different threads here today and you spend time complaining that I have posted in a thread that is 2 years old. If you didn’t wish to participate any more in an old thread, why did you bother to read my post in it?

| . Hello, flja. I apologize for upsetting you. I don't know where else you've posted on this website. I replied to THIS particular thread because I have "subscribed" to it, so the website lets me know when someone makes a comment here. I don't know who's "ignorance" you're trying to "confront", but "RockDude_UK", the person who started this thread, has NOT been active on this website since June, 2008. http://www.usa-flag-site.org/forum/members/rockdude_uk.html Sorry to have disturbed you while you were on such an important "mission". | 4. Which two state capitals were also National capitols at some point in their history? Trick question. The Constitution only recognizes Washington, D.C. as the U.S. seat of government so WashingtonD.C. has been the only official capital of the U.S. under the Constitution. But Philadelphia served as the de facto U.S. capitol during the Revolutionary War and Confederation period. Then the U.S. federal government met in New York City before moving to Philadelphia and then Washington, D.C. Actually, the trick question is even trickier! The original question said "national capitals" not "capitals of the United States." It seems to me that there are actually *three* current state capitals that were once national capitals: Annapolis (where the Continental Congress briefly sat at the end of the Revolution), Austin and Honolulu. The latter two, of course, were capitals of independent nations that later became part of the USA. Philadelphia and New York are not currently state capitals, although they were in the past. | . QUOTE (NAVA1974) : "4. Which two state capitals were also National capitols at some point in their history?" Well..... IF you consider that the "Confederate States of America" (C.S.A.) was at one time a "Nation", then both Richmond, Virginia and Montgomery, Alabama as State Capitals would qualify as NATIONAL CAPITALS, wouldn't they ??? If you don't count the C.S.A. as a "nation", then neither Richmond nor Montgomery would count as both State & National capitals, would they ??? Hmmmm . . . . . Robin Hickman Eugene, Oregon, USA .

| IF you consider that the "Confederate States of America" (C.S.A.) was at one time a "Nation", then both Richmond, Virginia and Montgomery, Alabama as State Capitals would qualify as NATIONAL CAPITALS, wouldn't they? Yes, indeed they would. It depends, as you say, on whether or not you consider the CSA to have been a nation. Once could, I suppose, take it one step further as well. At the beginning of the Civil War, several of the southern states seceded from the union and declared themselves to be independent individually, before eventually joining the Confederacy. Some of them, such as South Carolina and Louisiana, even adopted national flags. One could argue that Columbia, Baton Rouge, Jackson, Tallahassee and Raleigh should be on the list as well.
