| The original question said "national capitals" not "capitals of the United States." It seems to me that there are actually *three* current state capitals that were once national capitals: Annapolis (where the Continental Congress briefly sat at the end of the Revolution), Austin and Honolulu. While looking over this old post, I realized that my previous answer was wrong. Congress sat briefly in Trenton in 1784, so there are actually *four* state capitals that were once national capitals (not including the Confederate possibilities). Peter A.
