| Is it proper to display the flag on a shoulder of a shirt? If so how should it be done?

| Back to the parade issue: Today we see most every organization participating in a parade displaying the flag in an acceptable way, and that's truly great! In addition, color guards have increased in popularity, and their might be several in a parade. It does raise the question, for those watching the parade, whether to stand as each flag passes by. As Sarah suggested, common sense might prevail, ie render honors (stand, salute/hand over heart) to the lead flag and not necessarily for every flag that follows. I suggest applause for every flag, and honors for every color guard. My 1936 Boy Scout Handbook covers every aspect of flag respect, but no reference to parades. I seem to remember parade organization rules that called for a lead color guard, and staffed flags permitted only to organizations that normally parade a flag, ie military units, bands, scouts, vets organizations, and so forth... to discourage the use of a flag as an ornament. But times have changed, and floats with dozens of small American flags are not uncommon. If treated with respect, and that's the key, I could not object. The subject deserves more thought. William

| Is it proper to display the flag on a shoulder of a shirt? If so how should it be done? It is on the Right shoulder. Cub Scouts wear it on their uniform, Girl Scouts wear it on their Uniform and Boy Scouts wear it on their uniforms. It flies facing forward to anybody who is looking at it unless...you are wearing an Army uniform with it sewn on the right shoulder and you are in combat. Then it flies facing backward to anybody looking at it. Wanna know why? A lot of Army soldiers can't even tell you why but...it is because in battle when the troops carried the flag it always flew in the wind and when flying in the wind when being carried it flies "backward" so this symbolizes carrying the flag in battle!
