Hi, Jenny!

People have been coming to America, and speaking foreign languages here, since the founding of our country. During the Revolutionary War, there was actually a German-language newspaper published in Philadelphia. The Spanish-speaking people who come here today are doing the same thing that the Germans, Swedes, Italians, Poles, Iranians, Lebanese, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc., etc. have done over the centuries. When they arrrive in what, to them, is a strange and even threatening environment, it's only natural that they initially want to hold onto things like language that they are familiar with. Usually, after a generation or so, they or their children end up speaking English anyway. It's a commonplace to say that we are a nation of immigrants, but the fact is, we are -- and in the long run I think that it makes us a better, stronger nation.

im tired of being at school, and there are
groups of "hispanics" in the hallways talking
in "spanish".

Could you explain why this bothers you so much?

I suspect that that person was not really Mexican, and that he/she just said all those stupid things to get a rise out of someone. (And it worked, didn't it!) I've found that the best way to deal with folks like that is to ignore them. If you try to argue with them, you're only feeding their egos.

So why is it that in the USA they have road signs and other information in SPANISH and you can call on the phone and be given the option of english or spanish? and theres no polish german swiss italian iranian lebonese chinese etc etc on them too??
i think i know why - because the mexicans arent being pushed to learn the language of the country that they have chosen to move to - the US has made it easy for them to not bother to learn - if there was nothing in spanish they would have to learn english - just like all the other people that move to the US

Well, probably because the people who put up those signs and set up the 'phone lines figure that it's good business to accomodate people who prefer to speak Spanish.

and theres polish german swiss italian iranian lebonese chinese etc etc on them too??

Actually there are in many cases. For example, there is a large Korean population here in Annandale, and it's common to see signs in Korean. Again, people do it because it's good business.

The majority of those immigrant families will probably learn English in a generation or so -- that's what has always happened historically, and it certainly makes sense to encourage them by offering ESL classes, etc. (My impression is that most are eager to do so -- the demand for ESL classes here in Northern Virginia is always high). If they don't, how is it anybody's business to "push" them? The USA is a free country -- we don't tell people what language they're allowed to speak any more than we tell them what kind of clothes they're allowed to wear.

There is a legitimate argument about how far governments should go in providing information and services in other languages. In most cases, however, it's simply a matter of common sense, and the cost involved is not unreasonable. I think that the modern "nativists" have blown this issue all out of proportion.

And, in the final analysis, we are a democracy. If, someday, the people of Miami or Los Angeles decide, though their democratic process, to conduct their public affairs in Spanish, why shouldn't they be allowed to do so? I don't think it will happen any time soon, and as native of Los Angeles I would not be too thrilled about it -- but that's the way democracy works.
