The US military has used flagpoles ever since it's been in existence. I doubt that anyone knows what the very first military flagpole was, but one of the earliest was the one that the Continental Army raised on Prospect Hill, outside Boston, in August 1775. (Boston was occupied by the British at the time). The pole was 76 feet high, and was made from the mast of a British warship that had been destroyed by the American troops the previous May. There is a monument on Prospect Hill today where the flagpole stood. Peter Ansoff
