    The Betsy Ross flag was not the first official flag . Infact the first official flag was designed by New Jersey Congressman and Declaration of Independence signer Francis Hopkinson . The Hopkinson flag first flew over continental troops in the summer of 1777 at the Middlebrook encampment in Bound Brook N.J. after it was adopted by congress .
