    Dear Madam/Sir:

I have read about the history and the design of the American Flag and I found it very interesting especially the bit how the section of the flag what is now the blue background with 50 white stars, used to be the British Union Jack. That is before independence. Now I came across the bit where it mentions the colors of the flag and what they symbolize. Now I may be wrong but weren't the colors of the current flag kind of based on the colors of the British union jack? Like the Confederate flag was based partly on the Scotish St. Andrews cross and again along with the Union jack. Because the Confederate flag does have that combinational layback to it. Anyway please feel free to email me about this because it would be an honour to hear from you. So take care bye for now.

    Yours truly

    Hello Bruce,
It's my understanding that there is no "official" meaning behind the colors chosen for the American flag. However Charles Thomson, Secretary of the Continental Congress, when describing the proposed Great Seal suggested that “White signifies purity and innocence, Red, hardiness & valour, and Blue . . . signifies vigilence, perseverence [sic] & justice.”

The first offical National flag was approved by the Continental Congress on June 14, 1777 and was The "stars and stripes". The configurations of the stars was undefined and there are several early design patterns.
