'Cross Spangled Banner' to Reawaken Forgotten Virtues of America

"Hoping to reawaken the virtue they claim America has forgotten, a few individuals from Milwaukee created a new flag replacing the 50 stars with crosses, the “universal symbol of God’s virtue.”

“As Christians, America is our responsibility second only to the Lord,” he continued. “We have adapted a Christian flag of the United States, designed to do away with an arbitrary element: the star......"

    Hi, Theo,

Does anyone know if this breach of etiquette violates and US law?

There is nothing illegal about what these folks are doing, and it is not terribly original, either. Variations of the flag with corporate logos, dollar signs, etc., in place of stars are rather common in political demonstrations and such. One could argue that these are not technically American Flags, since the legal definition in 4 USC says that the flag has stars. However, their significance as symbols is obviously based on their resemblance to the American flag.

Not to mention a few years back there was a series of college sports flags that were strongly influenced by the American Flag. The schools logo replaced the star field, and the stripes were done in the schools colors. I have one from Xavier University and it's actually a well made flag with sewn stripes and quad fly end stitching on nylon.

Just remember, all of these aren't American flags and thus fall put of the purview of the flag code.

To me as a Christian and an American it is a breach of good taste.

The Supreme Court of the United States has said that desecration of the American Flag is protected speech under the First Amendment to the Constitution. The Supreme Court has not been given the authority to determine what is in "good taste" or not.

That is probably a good thing.
