Displaying the American Flag as Color banners on Light Poles

Hello, First post on this site.


I see, as most have, Our American Flag displayed on almost every light pole in an auto dealer’s car lot. I personally find this distasteful.

I cannot find anything regarding displaying the Flag this way. Does anyone have any information on this? Personal opinions?

There is nothing in the flag code that says you cannot display the flag this way, or anything to limit the number of flags you may display in one location

Personally.. Im from England. When I went to the USA last time in 2006, I loved the sight of the flags on poles attached to the light poles through cities, towns and villages that I passed through. I thought it was delightful! And as for them flying huge flags at auto dealers, and putting up as many flags as they could, for me.. the more the merier!
As long as the flags are in a good condition, and not dirty, or rag ended, I don't see there is any problem!

The United States Flag Code address this in a couple of ways. Yes the flags should not be used for advertising purposes. However as long as the flags are lit at night, I don't see that a car dealer flying the American flag to be in violation.
