Default Disposal of Old Glory...

I live on a AF Base. I have an old flag that is very worn and tattered that a neighbor left behind when he PCSed. I don't have anything to properly display it and like I said, it is very worn. I would like to dispose of it properly by burning it as the code says. I have a fire pit in my back yard. Is that acceptable or should I do something else? I do not want to disrespect the flag in any way so should I just do that? A little advice would be helpful, Thanks!

Hi there

Yes I think the fire pit will be fine

I have burned US flags on 2 occasions. The 1st was at the back of my parents house. I just made a fire with some newpaper and a few sticks of wood on the ground and put the flag in - watching that I didnt put the small fire out with the flag!
The 2nd time was at my boyfriends parents house and they have burner- a small chamber on legs with a chimney coming out the top and a door in the front.

That 2nd time I carried out more a ceremony. This is optional but I think its a nice thing to do
I kissed the flag and pledged alliegence before I put it into the burner, then once it was in and I had lit it I stood watching until it had gone.

A fire pit will be absolutley fine though

I would recommend that you turn it over to your local V.F.W. Post or American Leigion Post for disposal.

Also, look for a local Boy Scout or Girl Scout group. They have ceremonies for the proper disposal of flags.
