Early 48 Star Flag

Here is an early example of a pre-Executive Order of 1912 48 star flag. Note the zig zag rows of stars. This was "corrected" by the Executive Order of 1912 set the stars in straight rows until 1959.

Great picture Nick! Those are pre-Executive Order of 1912 flags, right? I am still having issues getting my pictures to display with the text. I have followed the directions but no love. I am on a Mac and had to use Firefox and I see it in preview mode but when I submit it all you see is the link. I am having same problem with the smilies too! :{

I don't know if it will solve you picture posting "problem" or not, but you might try following the steps I outlined in another thread.

It starts on page two of the thread but it covers getting your pics ATTACHED to a posting, and having the pics INCLUDE in the body of the post.

Yes, you both noted that my postcard shows the girl holding two 48-star flags. The 1910 calendar shows it was made in 1909, fully three years before the 48 star flag supposedly came into use. I have also seen this little girl and her flags postmarked in 1908 and 1909. Why a 48 star flag so early? My GUESS is (and this is only reasoned speculation) that following the Spanish American War when the country had 45 states, we acquired Puerto Rico, Cuba, and The Philippines. In an era of Manifest Destiny at least one flagmaker seems to have added three stars in honor of those new acquisitions.

Has anyone else seen evidence of 48-star flags from the 1908-1911 era??

Soviet (Russian) made Courtesy flag. It is printed on heavy wool bunting with a rope sewn into the header. It has re-enforcement "patches" on the top and bottom of the hoist and extra stitching on the fly corners. Ironically, it is closer to the official regulations specs than what most US flag makers produce. I believe the reason for that is that the former Soviet Union flag was 1:2 ratio. However, I think the stars are too small. Yet the Russians know how to make flags.

Hi Nick,
Yes, I am glad you asked because I have several Soviet naval flags which all have codes/dates stamped on the header and never paid attention to this one until now and I see that this flag is different in that the stamp has a company logo and it is a higher quality stamp (you can read all of it). Maybe this was privately made for the Soviet navy? 1987 was the year that is stamped on it. Note the re-enforcement patches covers one of the stars in the upper left side corner and part of a white stripe. As you can tell it is a printed dyed type process and you can see they put a thin gray line to offset the blue canton from the stripes. I really like this flag even though the stars should be a bit larger and the width of every stripe is different even though it is printed. The flag measures at 33"x 72". It is made of two panels of wool bunting sewn together. One is 25" wide and the other is 8".
