Etiquette for Law Enforcement Officer in uniform

I am attempting to gather information as to the proper etiquette for an LEO while in uniform as far as saluting or simply placing right hand over heart. Also, etiquette regarding headgear and saluting while indoors/outdoors. This is something not addressed in my agency's policy and, in speaking with other officers, no definitive guidelines have come forth. Does anyone have info or experience with this issue? Is it the same general guidelines as military in uniform?
