| Possibly this question is simply beginning to reflect my age (I'm 53); but I was wondering whether you could point me to a reference that specifically states what is an acceptable response or etiquette upon completion of the Star Spangled Banner? My wife was in Color Guard at her high school and I did a few years of scouting when young. Both of us in recalling our school training and activity backgrounds recalled that it was inappropriate etiquette to cheer or clap at the completion of the Star Spangled Banner at any event. However, in recent years (particularly in the 60's - 70's) it appeared that it became culturally acceptable to cheer or clap at the completion of the Anthem at outside sporting events. Then more recently at inside sporting events. It currently appears that it has become acceptable to cheer or clap after the Anthem is played at athletic events (both outside and inside); but still considered inappropriate to do such at cultural events (like concerts and assemblies). Is there a publication that clearly states the etiquette after playing or singing the Anthem? We recently had a discussion at work on this matter between the generations; as a shift in the culture appears to be occurring. I'd appreciate your assistance if you know of a resource on this topic. Thanks.

| Maybe it's showing my age (which we won't talk about), but I grew up with cheering after the National Anthem, especially at sporting events. Now that singing the National Anthem at major sporting events has become a way for singers to get exposure, I think the trend toward applauding at the end will only continue. (Though I think you're right about not applauding at a concert or civic event.) I've looked around and I can't find any specific reference to what you do after "The Star Spangled Banner." The U.S. Flag Code only speaks to what you should do while it is playing. The section that deals with this is concise, so I'll quote it directly: Quote:
If anyone else has insights on the cheering controversy, please share! Sarah

| Well, as anyone who lives in Ohio knows, the last two words to the national anthem are: GO BUCKS
