Spring is in the air, flowers are in bloom, and flags are once again starting to sprout from the neighbor's porches.

I haven't been posting all of my finds to the forums (I thought perhaps people were getting tired of the posts), but I just reworked my flag collection website, and did some massive updates to it.

So as we enter Flag Season - here is a look the my flag collection:
Besides, the forum software was scolding me for not participating in the community for awhile.

I have learned a lot in the couple of hours I have been a member. I did a display of some of my collection last year at our local Veteran's Museum during the week of July 4th and am enclosing a website where you may look at some photos from that display. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1750096&type=3 I am looking forward to meeting members of this forum.

Hello,

I recently bought a 48 star Valley Forge burial flag 5x9.5 in excellent condition. I know these flags are common and i have read all the post concerning the dating of these flags, however, i still have a couple of questions:

1. My flag has the stamp: Valley Forge Flage Co 5x9.5 Spring City, Penna. Some of these flags have the same stamp except without the "Spring City, Penna. Which one pre-dates the other, and what time period would these stamp flags have been manufactured in?

2. These flags also use brass grommets. Would these flags have been manufactured during the war with brass being a strategic material in short supply?

Thanks,
Ken

I just completed this flag. I decided to use a less well known design rather than the standard 5x5 star field. I know very little about the design itself except that it was described as a "Sea Ensign". I take that to mean it was used on Navy ships. It lasted for only 1 year (possibly less) from 1836 to 1837. The canton runs half the length and I enlarged the central star compared to the drawings where I have seen it depicted. Thinking of tackling the 44 star flag next.

The flag has a bit of distress, but these things don't really concern me as flags were ment to be used and this one has deffinetly gotten used.:o
The stars are as you can see printed on what is a really nice blue union and the stripes have maintained there beutiful colors as well.

Again please think outloud as you look at the photos, let me know what you think.

Thanks,

I know this is getting into a bit of detail but I am stumped for an explanation and thought I would ask here.

Most stars are placed point up especially on everything after 1912. I have come across a star pattern that has me puzzled. There is a very rare star pattern for a 25 star flag called a Sea Ensign. I assume it is for Navy vessels. The 25 star flag existed less than a year and I believe the normal star field layout was a 5 x 5 square.

Here is a drawing of the 25 star sea ensign.

I am accepting that this flag probably existed but have no confirmation of that.

Looking at the design, I am puzzled about the way the middle star is oriented at an angle. Is there any reason the star would be oriented like that on purpose?

How can a collector put an educated guess on a flags date? For instance, I collect 48 star flags and as we all know this is a very wide time period in which it was used. How can I put a close date on say a 20's flag or a 50's flag? What are some date give aways, markings, sewing technics used, materials, bunting manufacturers, ect.

Thank you for you answers.

hello forum members, i have recently come to own a large american flag with 21 stars on it. The stars are hand painted and in the grand star design. The middle star is larger than the rest and it has significant damage. One smaller star is also damaged. The rest of the flag has been damaged and repaired in spots. after having the flag inspected, i was told that the repairs were made with the same material that the flag was originally made of, so the repairs are just as old as the flag itself. The flag has faint writing on it that say 1860..the rest of the writing can not be read with any certainty. I know that a flag this rare can attract several thousand dollars but i am not asking for top $. The flag is not framed and although it is very large(11 feet long) it can be folded back shorter and still appear accurate in size. If anyone is interested in this once in a lifetime buy of if you know of someone who may be curious about this flag than feel free to respond via forum or email at jvalley1977@gmail.com
thank you everyone
