I am a newbie here, and it is great to see a site dedicated to our flag. Ihave a question.
I am the Comander of our American Legion Post and have been asked to do a ceremony for the raising of a World War I flag. The owner of the flag would like us to raise it on our flagpole, then bring it down and properly fold it. I don't want to just raise it and leave it for a few minutes without some special dedication to it.

Please advise of any ideas

What an interesting question!

You could always do just what the Flag's owner requested. QUOTE : "The owner of the flag would like us to raise it on our flagpole, then bring it down and properly fold it."

IF you decided to do it like that, I'd suggest that Veterans' Day would be the PERFECT time to do it, since it originally commemorated the end of the "Great War" (World War I) which ended on the 11th Hour, of the 11th Day, in the 11th Month of the Year, 1918.

I suppose PART of the answer might depend on what the "background" or "history" of the Flag is. Is there anything "special" about the Flag itself or where and when it "flew". What about it's connection to the Post. Is the owner of the Flag one of your Post's members? Is there a particular reason why he/she wants to fly it from the Post's flagpole? Is the Flag a "Burial Flag", and if so, for whom?

IF you decide to perform a special ceremony, then you might want to include some of the information about the Flag, or its history, its owner, etc. Since it is a World War I Flag, you might want to include some relevent information about the War and our nation's involvement in it.

If the Flag has a well-documented "history", especially if it is an "important" one, the Post might want to consider providing a triangular wooden presentation box to put the Flag in after the "ceremony" and folding. Maybe even a little brass plaque telling its story?

The veterans' organization at my former NY armory always has a Veterans' Day ceremony (Armistice Day ) ceremony on 11Nov @ 1100hrs. Part of the ceremony includes the WWI poem: "In Flanders' Field". What better way to honor the flying of a WWI flag than with the reading of a WWI poem?
