    Default Flag Display

My department has acquired a steal beam from the World Trade Center. Is it appropriate to cover this object with the US Flag during a parade? Everything I have read in the US Flag Code lists tells me it is not permissible. Is this appropriate for the US Flag?

    Hi, mlonganbach,

You are correct. The flag code is pretty clear that the flag should not be used as a cover or drapery. If there a were a way to suspend it from the beam, so that it could hang or fly freely, that would be much more appropriate.

I see that many other departments are displaying the flag in this fashion. Some are considering these steel beams as possible caskets. Have there been any other posts or questions concerning this ?

Exclamation Re: Flag Display - "Do The Right Thing"!!!

    ....

Since you've already indicated that you know what the right thing to do IS, let me remind you and, hopefully, the "many other departments" :

A Steel Beam by any other name is STILL a Steel Beam (and NOT a "casket")!!!

Do the right thing NOT because you'll get a pat on the back if you do, or a kick in the seat of the pants if you don't, but do the right thing simply because it's the right thing to do.

PS. With all due respect : If the "many other departments" decided to all go jump off a cliff, would you jump off one too? Come on, "Do The Right Thing"!

    PPS. Good luck!!!

In rememberance of 9-11 this Sunday I have a question. I work in commercial property management and we have several buildings in our park and we have 3 flags in the area and normal business hours are Mon-Fri. My quesiton is should we lower the flags around the area with it being on a Sunday?

Thank you in advance for your help,

    Dear Amber,

To take a few minutes of your own time to lower the company's flags would be an even greater honor to the memory of the 9/11 victims.
