Default Flag displayed flat, no 1/2 staff

I am wondering how we can honor a local hero who recently died in Iraq.
We have a large flag displayed flat, attached to a side wall of our home. As we don't have it on a pole, can't do 1/2 staff. Can we drap with a black band? What is appropriate?

Adding a ribbon of black crepe or silk or satin, etc., to the upper corner next to the canton is the appropriate method.
