Question "FLAG Holidays" Forum ???

.
There have been a few occasions when I have wanted to post something regarding a "Flag" holiday (such as tomorrow's FLAG Day), or a Flag-flying day or event, but have been unable to figure out WHICH forum to post it in.

I suppose if it had to do with a day in the past, then it would have gone into the "Historical" forum, or if it was about a day of mourning, it would have gone into the "Half Staff, Half Mast" forum.

I'm thinking along the lines of some kind of "announcement" page, or "calendar", or something. Maybe a "discussion" of "why" particular days are "Flag Holidays", or "how" they became that way. I'm not sure.

For instance, tomorrow (Sunday), June 14th, is "FLAG Day". Most of us already know that. I was researching "Capitol Flags" (How to get a Flag that's been flown over the U.S. Capitol Building). I got curious about whether there was something similar for obtaining a Flag that's been flown over the White House.

When I went looking for information about it, which I have not yet found, I ran across a White House link that led to a webpage that carried the text of President Barak Obama's Official Proclamation declaring June 14th as FLAG Day, and the week of June 14-20, 2009 as FLAG WEEK.

I was a little surprised on TWO accounts. ONE, I never knew that the President of the United States issues proclamations about "FLAG Day" and, TWO, that there was such a thing as FLAG WEEK!

Needless to say, I was a bit embarrassed about my ignorance in this matter, but I immediately thought about sharing my exciting discovery here by posting a link to the Presidential Proclamation and maybe its text, but WHERE?

Well, as long as I'm HERE.....

http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Presidential-Proclamation-Flag-Day-and-National-Flag-Week/

Heck, I didn't even know (remember?) that it is part of the U.S. Code (Flag Code) !

Then, of course, I got real curious as to how "bad" my naivete is and I went looking. Well, it didn't take long to find out (it's pretty bad!).

TITLE 36 > Subtitle I > Part A > CHAPTER 1 - PATRIOTIC AND NATIONAL OBSERVANCES

Anyway, I was just wondering, and I still am, if it would work to add a new forum about "Flag Holidays", or "Flag Flying Announcements", or maybe a "Flag Flying CALENDAR", or something.

THANX,

Robin "Where Can I Put This Square Peg?" Hickman

Robin,
I am pretty sure the White House is not in the business of flying flags on demand like our elected representatives on Capitol Hill are. As far as the Presidential Proclamation goes, I can't get that excited about that, seeing as Barak Obama has already issued 50 different ones since he became President last January, including June's Proclamation 8387 - Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month, 2009

Hi, Nick !

I understand that the POTUS issues "proclamations" on an almost daily basis. My embarrassment stemmed from the fact that even though I've known of, and have observed "FLAG Day" for DECADES, I did NOT know that there was a Presidential Proclamation about it, AND... I had forgotten that there was such an "event" as "Flag Week"!!!

The purpose of this thread, of course, is to comment on the "need" of a forum specifically for "Flag Holiday" issues such as announcements, observances, discussions, a calendar, etc.

We are now into the third day of "Flag Week". We are actively preparing for the challenges that we will face tomorrow, Wednesday, June 17th, the notorious "Hump Day" of "Flag Week" !!!

Ah, well.....

Robin
