Default Flag Saluting

I'm loking for information regarding fire and police saluting the flag during the National Anthem and when the flag passes in a public occassion, ceremonies or parades.

Hello, Rick -- welecome!

I'm loking for information regarding fire and police saluting the flag during the National Anthem and when the flag passes in a public occassion, ceremonies or parades.

The civilian Flag Code states that persons "in uniform" will give the "military salute" in those situations. It doesn't specifically describe the military salute, but I think the general understanding was that it meant the more-or-less standard US military practice -- right hand touching the forehead or headgear with the palm facing down and all fingers extended.

As to whether the code was intended to apply to uniformed police and fire organizations, that's a good question. In practice, individual organizations are free to set their own rules and regulations on the subject. I do know, for example, that New York City Police Department officers do salute the flag that way when in uniform.

Best,

Peter Ansoff
