    Default Flag used for crafts

The American Red Cross came to my Mother's Assisted Living home and asked them to cut up the flag to make crafts to send to people serving our country. They wanted them to cut out the stars and make ornaments, tree skirts and cards. My Mother as appalled and refused. The Red Cross said they have a paper allowing them to do this. What do you know about this?

Hello, Jean Brock! Welcome to the USA-Flag-Site Forums !!!

I know of NO official "paper" that would "allow" the American Red Cross, or anybody else, the right to cut up American Flags to make "crafts projects" or anything else.

If the American Red Cross has/had a paper, it is/was one created by the American Red Cross themselves.

The main reason that the U.S. Flag Code allows for the destruction (by fire) of American Flags after they have served their primary purpose (representing the United States of America) was to insure that they'd NEVER be used for ANY other purpose whatsoever!

That's just MY opinion, of course!

Well at least Robin and I and a few others on this Forum aren't the only ones who think cutting out stars from the flag is a form of desecration. "Mother" lived during World War II, no doubt, and along with most of the rest of her generation developed a strong sense of how to treat the American Flag with proper respect.
