Default Flying a state flag in another state and without and American flag

I have a flag from my home state (NC) and I'm living in New York. Are there any protocols I should be following? Is it ok to fly the flag without the American flag also flying?

If I fly the NC flag outside should it be lowered every day?

Also, the flag was flown over the NC capitol building but only briefly. Am I allowed to even fly my NC flag?

Hello, Southerner In The North !

Welcome to the USA-Flag-Site forums !

As for flying a North Carolina State Flag at your new home in New York State : I'd think that it would be okay, AND... It might even start up some conversations with your new neighbors!

BUT.....

You MIGHT want to reconsider flying THAT particular North Carolina State Flag!

WHY?

Because it was flown over the NC State Capitol Building.

That means that it is a "commemorative" or "presentation" flag. Flags that have been flown over a Capitol building have been done so to "commemorate" a person or event, or because the Flag is to be "presented" to someone. In other words, they are "special" Flags worthy of being kept in a special place (not flown on a regular basis).

Are there ANY documents that came with the Flag attesting to the fact that it was flown over the State Capitol, on a given date, for a given reason ?

Perhaps your NC Flag was flown over the Capitol on December 17, 2003 to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Wright Brothers' first heavier-than-air aircraft flight at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17, 1903 ???

Anyway, I'd recommend putting your Flag away for safekeeping and getting another NC Flag to fly at your new home.

Again, welcome to the Forums !

Robin Hickman

Thanks for all the info and suggestions!

I'm still waiting for someone to ask about the flag but nobody has taken the bait yet!

Its funny, I asked for an NC flag for Christmas this past year and my dad bought me one. He then took it by the old capitol building and asked if they could fly it. Sure enough two officers at the building took it up the stairs, lowered the flag that was flying, raised the one my dad provided, lowered it, and then raised the original flag once more. The woman at the front desk wrote on a card saying that it had been flown above the old capitol building and included it with the flag. I guess I should keep it somewhere safe and buy a new flag...

My dad's birthday is coincidentally December 17th. Helps me remember the one another, ha.

As Robin indicates, I would purchase a new NC flag.

A flag with some history attached to it, such as the certification that it has flown above the capitol building, has some extra value even if it's only sentimental.

Outdoor flying will take its toll on the flag faster than if you were to display it indoors. Since it would be much harder (I presume) to get another flag flown on the capitol building than to visit your friendly neighborhood flag shop, I'd say go out and buy another one for your outdoor display and preserve your special NC flag. Note that you may have to go to a shop that specializes in flags or turn to the internet to get a flag for a different state that isn't close to you.
