I want to know if we should fold the US flag when it is removed or retired to be cleaned and/or repaired? I had one veteran tell me we need not fold the flag when removed for this purpose.
Thank you,
George

If you mean should it be folded in the "traditional" ceremonial triangle shape when it is being taken to be cleaned and/or repaired the answer is, no, it doesn't. You veteran friend is correct.
It should be folded up neatly and placed in a bag or container of some kind so it will be easier to transport to wherever it is to be cleaned and/or repaired.
Hope that helps!![]()

Just as a side note, there is nothing that says that the flag must be folded in the tricorn pattern, although that's normally the way it is done in military ceremonies and displays. There's nothing wrong with folding or storing it in a different way if circumstances require.
I fold my "working" flags vertically in fourths, and put them on clip-hangers, like the ones that are used for trousers and such. This keeps them from being excessively creased, and allows me to store them in a closet near the front door.
