The popularity of the Don’t Tread on Me flag has increased nationally. Freedom activists in the new “Tea Party” are responsible for the movement. In recent protests they have been waving the Gadsden flag. Though the flag originally symbolized a call for the colonies to present a strong and unified front, Tea Party activists have embraced the “Don’t Tread on Me” flag as a symbol of state autonomy from the federal government.

As someone who works in the media, I see your observation as being partially true. In spite of the demonization of the Tea Party by the media as homogenized, white, far right wackos. The truth of the matter is the movement is quite diverse in makeup and philosophy. I agree with you that most Tea Party members are very concerned about the direction the country is going but I don't believe they are ready to secede from the Union just quite yet.
