Default Gold vs Silver border on flag patch

I am a retired vet and I wore the flag on my right sleeve with the union facing the viewers right. The patch has a gold/yellow border. Has anyone heard of a flag patch with a silver border? If so, is there some type of "code" for the use of the gold border vs. the silver border? The reason for my question is that someone thought that the gold border was for military use and silver was for civilian use.

Borders on patches are like fringes on flags - they have no significance and are purely decorative. A few US States specify the color of fringes when used. For example, when the flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia has a fringe, it is supposed to be a silver or white fringe and the fly end only, not around the three free sides of the flag. The Standard of the President of the US has a gold/silver / yellow/white fringe which is an indication of the importance of the Office of POTUS.

The color of the borders on flag patches are up to discretion of the user.
Here's one site that sells flag patches and it is the purchaser's option to select yellow or white:

Sorry that it is Made in China, but that's what showed up first.

    Hi Sandyman,
I have never heard or seen a silver border on a flag patch or any flag for that matter. I have seen a white border on a flag patch but I think it was part of the manufacturing process of the patch itself however. While the military does call for gold fringe on the national color for certain situations, several state flags also adorn gold fringe in official settings. The Virginia state flag is sometimes displayed with white fringe but just on the fly end of flag. As far as I know it is the only state flag that does it. Go to this link for more information:
