Default Guarding US Flag

Is it proper to guard the American Flag from the rear ?
With a 9 man front, 5 flags & 4 riflemen, the front may
be too large.
Can we have two rows with the 5 flags in first row and
4 riflemen in the second row, still guarding the US flag
from the rear (within 3 paces) rather than beside the
US flag ?
I thought I had read somewhere that it would be proper,
but I can't find anything on it now.

Thanks,
Jim
