Helllo Lizzil and welcome to the USA flag forum! The topic of "52 states" has been discussed extensively elsewhere on this forum but rest easy - there are only 50 states and it has been that way since 1959. In fact, on the recent July 4 our current American flag turned 50-years old - the 50-star flag became official on 4 July 1960 and it has flown over this nation for a half-century now.
We're not quite sure where this cockamamie idea of 52 states came from, but it is oddly popular. I do know that the Federal Government agency that I work for has 50 Division Offices, one in each state plus D.C. and Puerto Rico. But as you may know DC has been trying for statehood for years and has been consistently rebuffed by Congress. Puerto Rico keeps revisiting the question but I think they realize each time that they are far better off as a "commonwealth" - they get more money with less responsiblity than if they were a state.

I think it was a typo on President Obama's teleprompter.
