Horizontal Display of the Flag in a Church

Our church has a flag hanging high from a wall in the front of the nave (the main central portion of the sanctuary). It hangs on the left side of the church building as you face the main altar, with the denominational flag directly opposite hanging from the right side.

The flag hangs from a mast extending at a 90 degree angle from the upper wall.

We recently replaced the flag and the "committee" decided to hang the flag with the union (stars field) to the left -- meaning the stars field is close to the wall, while the stripes hang further out into the nave to the right (effectively the tip of the staff).

I have spent a few hours researching this, including reading the U.S. Code on proper flag display. I can see the room for error in this situation, as there are many instances where the union is supposed to be upper left (hanging on a wall, in a window, suspended on a rope across a street or in a main hallway). But the way it's displayed in our church does not feel right. It's on a mast, not a rope, and it's on the left side of the building, not suspended across the center of the church. Further, if the mast in question were pitched upward at even the slightest degree, the flag would clearly be upside-down.

I would welcome input and even photos of proper display in church interiors. I have a group of people I need to convince, if in fact they're wrong.

I had to read this post twice to make sense of it!

Being on the left side as you face the alter would be a proper position for the flag, as it should be on its own right as it faces the viewer - in this case the church congregration


I am trying to understand how much of a tilt this is that you mention, that it flag isnt entirely horizontal.. - at what angle does it tilt upward?? Is it slight, or a pronounced angle?

Masbe if you could get a pic of it, it would help me understand more

If its only a slight tilt up then i woulden't see much of a problem, but f its more pronounced - then another way you can hang the flag is the other way around horizontally, so the union of the flag is nearest the centre of the church and the stripes toward the left, and mirror it with the denominational flag to the other side


As I say.. a picture would provide me a better understanding so that I could answer better
