How to autheticate a 13 star flag??

Hello everyone!
I am new to this site and I have a question. I have a 13 star flag that was handed down to me from my grandmother. I have heard the story behind it, but no way to prove it's age or value. I am wondering how I would do this? I have been told there is a number on the back of the flag, but it has been in a glass case for several years and I am worried if I take it out of the case it will harm the material. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your email. Forum members have expertise in antique flags and can help. Please reply with a description of the details of the flag as you can see it in its case. Approximate size? Materials? Hand Sewn? How are the stars affixed? Condition? A photo would be of tremendous help.
