Hello,

Anyone can raise the flag, but it certainly would be a nice touch to have the veterans do it. They probably already know the protocol for raising the flag, but here are the basics.

When the flag is being raised, everyone should stand and face it respectfully. Those in uniform should salute, while others should put their hands on their hearts.

The flag should be unfolded and attached to the pole, then raised quickly to the top. You could play the national anthem while the flag was being raised or after.

When taking the flag down, it should be lowered slowly and then folded into the traditional triangle shape (fold it in half horizontally twice, then fold over and over in the triangle shape).

Hey Sara.

Here's another tip.

Start folding the triangle from the end of the stripes toward the stars. I usually make a small (2 inches or so) fold first, then start with the triangles. That way, when you are finised folding the only thing you see are the stars.
