Default I made a spearhead ornament for the flagpole.

Well, it's not exactly a spearhead, but something along those lines. It was made on the CNC lathe at work(I'm a machinist)out of aluminum. I was going to just make it a cone, but a coworker suggested I get fancy with it. Some of the radii and angles did not come out as planned, but I am not not that good with complicated programs. Now a trip to Home Depot tomorrow for some gold paint. Length-8" largest diameter-1.75".

Nice work, Bill! I don't think I would bother with the gold paint -- it looks great as is.

Having already seen the damage that can be done to flags by semi-sharp "pointy" finials (upside down "spades", spear points, crosses, and of course, eagles!) my question would be, is there any way to "round off" the point on that thing???

Or maybe change it into a nice, "up-draft friendly", ball???

Hi Robin and Peter. I think it looks good as it is, but aluminum will oxidize if left unprotected. Am I correct? And we get alot of rain here. And Robin, I'm going to smooth out the tip with the belt sander and Dremel tool.

One way or another, Good Luck with it, Bill !!!

Ball finials are, by far, the most "Flag Friendly" ones that a flagpole can have. Any finial with any kind of an "edge" (sharp or dull) to it can snag and rip a flag that is unfortunate enough to be caught in any kind of an up-draft.

Hmmmm..... I wonder if there's a "Teflon" Flag spray that might help ?
