| We do a display of Winchester Lee Straight Pull rifles which includes one of the rifles recovered from the USS Maine. I am looking for an original U.S. 45 Star flag which I wish to display horizontally, and it can be no wider than 36". Is there such a size available, or will I have to alter my thinking. Availability?? Search our blog site for the display which we will be expanding to accomodate for the flag. hotchkissguru.blogspot.com Thank You, Jim

| Hi Jimmiejoe, Welcome to the American Flags Forum! You have a great blogspot, very well done. To answer your question, finding an original 45 star flag of that size might be difficult. Ebay would be your best resource for that but it seems that during that period 3'x5' size flags were not as plentiful as the larger flags. I have seen evidence of this from collecting over the years. I have about a half a dozen of 45 star flags and only recently have I seen a 3'x5' size, mostly are 4' x 6' or even larger. Your best bet might be to have a reproduction flag made to your requirements. There are several online companies that do this and prices range from $75-$150 for a cotton flag. BTW, we have one of the naval jacks of the USS Maine here in the Norfolk Naval Museum. I have a few pics of it if you are interested. Also we have more serious collectors than myself on the forum that can probably give you additional advice too. Again welcome! Cheers! Mike

| JimmieJoe, I think I misread your post. Are you asking for a 2' x 3' (24" x 36") flag? If so ebay would stll be your best chance of finding one however it will most likely will be a thin cotton printed flag. Again you could have a sewn flag made in that size but it could be pricey. Below is my 3' x 5' (36" x 60") 45 star flag. 45 Star.jpg

| . Howdy! There are a number of on-line Flag retailers who offer "historic" U.S. Flags for sale. One such is, to my knowledge, our Forums ONLY advertiser (at the top of every page!) : AmericanFlags.com. They have a page titled, "The Evolution Of Old Glory", where they display thumbnails & links of the variously numbered starred Flags in chronological order. http://www.americanflags.com/evofoldgl.html Click on the 45-Star Flag and the link will send you to THIS page : http://www.americanflags.com/45-star-us-flag.html A 3'x5' 45-Star NYLON U.S. Flag lists for $89.00. As I wrote earlier, there are a number of on-line flag retailers that carry "historic" U.S. Flags. However, not all of them carry the complete line of all of the various incarnations of our Nation's Flag! Of those that do carry all of the starred versions, I don't know how many of them will have them in COTTON. I just now conducted a search on eBay for 45 Star flags shows that right now there are 18 of them up for auction/sale. http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m570.l1313&_nkw=%2245+Sta r%22+Flag&_sacat=See-All-Categories Prices range from $7.99 to $1,200. A little patience & persistance in your search will pay off in the long run. GOOD LUCK !!! Robin Hickman Eugene, Oregon, USA .

| $1200 for a 45 star flag? How ridiculous! Did it belong to Teddy Roosevelt? What people do on ebay never ceases to amaze me.

| . Well..... That's what they are/were ASKING (or best offer)..... A search for the "Completed Listings" for 45-Star +Flag shows what they WERE (or were NOT) GETTING! Which better shows the "market value" of 45-Star Flags. http://completed.shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=%2245+Star%22+Flag&_in_kw=1&_ex_kw=&_s acat=See-All-Categories&_okw=%2245+Star%22+Flag&_oexkw=&_adv=1& LH_Complete=1&_udlo=&_udhi=&_samilow=&_samihi=&_sa dis=200&_fpos=Zip+code&_fsct=&LH_SALE_CURRENCY=0&_ sop=1&_dmd=1&_ipg=50&_rdc=1 Robin Hickman Eugene, Oregon, USA .

Genuine 45 star American Flag with Certificate of Auth - eBay (item 280546431051 end time Aug-16-10 04:02:33 PDT) The flag is worth $200 at most, yet it comes with a Certificate of Authenticity from Nathanial Daniel Isen and a price of $900. Oddly enough, I can't find anything about Isen or his expertise on flags. While I was searching for Isen I did find something else interesting - Someone is offering this very same $900 45-star flag on Craigslist for $1500!! Nick

| . Hi, Nick ! Actually, that $900 Flag has been reduced all the way down to $700. I don't know if it's the same 45-Star Flag that you mentioned was on Craig's List for $1,500, but this one is located in Clawson, MI. I started eBay's "Completed Listing" search function (every once in a while) a few months ago after I found out that it existed. I've been on eBay since 2003 and knew nothing about it! Sheesh! If you can do a concise enough search it is a pretty good way to "ball park" an item's relative "market value". One of my favorites is the absolutely pristine (looks brand new) 35-Star Civil War "Fort" Flag (that was featured on PBS' "Antiques Roadshow" in the yet-to-beaired" Billings, Montana show) that first went up for bid for a mere $10,000 !!! AKA : "Antique CIVIL WAR 35 STARS American FLAG Old UNION Fort" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130409354587&ssPageNam e=STRK:MEWAX:IT Mercifully, cooler (more rational) heads have prevailed and the price has been reduced all the way down to..... Well, go see for yourself : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130425372281&ssPageNam e=STRK:MEWAX:VRI OH, WELL . . . . . Robin .

After I posted that message I noticed that the $1500 Craigslist flag was also from Clawson, MI - apparently the person does own that flag. However the certificate of authenticity is still pure BS if you ask me. Regarding the 35-star flag selling at a bargain price of $9999.99, you forgot to mention the seller is offering FREE SHIPPING!! Nick
