Default Interesting website on flag manufacture in 1924

Hey there all

I was browsing around randomly on Yahoo, and came across this interesting article on the manufacturing process of the US flag in 'Uncle Sams factory' in 1924
Just thought some fellow flag enthusiasts would enjoy reading it as I did.

Thanks for that article. It confirms the method of attaching stars that I have repeated on this forum before when the question about "gold stars" comes up. (They are just cotton stars that happen to come from different lots of fabric and age faster than the other stars.) The article also has an engraving of Betsy Ross that duplicates a Beer advertising poster in my collection. I have attached a pic. Notice that the beer ad does not include the fellow chatting with Betsy. The beer was "Horlacher's" and must have gone out of business years ago.

It's interesting that the article refers to the manufacture of both silk and bunting flags. As I recall, US Army regiments were issued national colors of both types. The silk ones were to be used in battle and in formal occasions such as reviews and parades, while the bunting ones were for everyday use.

The dimensions given at the end of the article are for Army national colors -- they are the same as the ones that are specified in the current version of Army Regulation 840-10 for indoor display, parades and ceremonial use. Garrison flags and Navy ensigns followed the 1:1.9 ratio hoist/fly ratio (and still do).
