Nick, you are correct that buying in country flags are more difficult. Besides buying a in country flag I also try to obtain a U.S. flag in the country I am visiting. That is if they make flags. I have so far a all wool printed Soviet made U.S., poly-silk printed Chinese made U.S. flag, real silk all sewn Cambodian made U.S., pre-WWII real silk printed Japanese made U.S. (it is absolutely gorgeous), nylon printed Canadian made U.S. and a polynit printed UK made U.S.

Well, it took my longer than I thought, let's see how Flickr's BBCode creator works... (If it fails I'll do some uploading)

First the star of the show - the Hungarian made Flag of Hungary:

Take note of the sewn together color panels and the detail on the coat of arms. I have a zoom in photo of that section:

Also on that trip, I visited:

Germany w/Eagle Flag by Coasterville, on Flickr

    and:

Austria w/ Eagle flag 2x3 by Coasterville, on Flickr

They always did say a picture was worth a thousand words right? That Austria flag is a small one (2'x3'), most likely not made in Austria but purchased there.

I get most of my international flags from the likes of the "Any flag for $5" kind of outfit - which does fine when I am basically collecting them as merit badges of where I have been. In that sense they are either the cheapest flags in my collection, or the most expensive flags when you consider the cost of visiting the country to earn the merit "flag". (And since most of the most recent were German speaking - the word Flag is Fahne)

Now I'll cross fingers and hit send.

I see I exceeded the picture limit:

Here are the more common civil versions:

Austria Flag by Coasterville, on Flickr

Germany Flag by Coasterville, on Flickr

    Of the:

Hmm, 13 5 pointed starts in a circle on a blue field. Change those stars from yellow to white, and use it as the canton of a red and white stripe flag, and you'd come close to a Betsy Ross. Coincidnece?

    .

Yes, the stars ARE 5-pointed and they ARE yellow, BUT . . . . .

    HOW many stars ???

Boy! Don't you just HATE it when they ALL point UP like that ???

I blame the SWISS for this "OLDER" version of the E.U. Flag. I think they designed it this way so that it could be used on the face of Swiss watches and cuckoo clocks in place of numerals and such !!!

I didn't even notice that, there are SUPPOSED to be 13 right? I never thought to count the stars on the flag.

Good theory that it was designed around a watch face adaptation.

I don't know, but we could always "Google It". Besides, I was just kidding you about the "Swiss Watch" stuff !

AS I alluided to in another thread, I have been going nutso adding flags to my collection.

Pics coming soon, but my latest addition came yesterday, a Soviet Union flag I found for $20 (okay $30 but they didn't ding me for shipping, and after seeing the postage, ergo a $20 flag). The flag is of very nice quality with the hammer/isckle/star appliqued on. It's a 4'x6' which is a tad bigger than I'd like, and although the white header is a bit dirty from use, the flag itself is in fine shape, a couple real tiny pinholes and some dirt, and the fly end corners are frayed a bit (I had been warned before purchase that it was being sold to me in used condition, and had defienetly been flown) All in all, still in fine enough shape for the collection.

The header is curous it mostly Annin with NYL-GLO TM 100% Nylon Bunting and their logo, but the part where it says Annin & Co. Since 1847. has had another tag sewn over it "Emerson Flags & Banners San Fransico, CA Made in USA"

I'll provide pics if you'd like.
