Default Making Holes in the Flag

We have a 12' X 18' USA flag hanging vertically by hooks inside a building. We wish to turn it 90 degrees left to hang it horizontally. The flag does not have hooks for horizontal hanging. It is "taboo" to make holes on the edge of the flag to attach hooks?

It should be fine to do that - but bear in mind, that the material is weaker on the flag itself, than on the specially made border.

You will need to do a good and professional job of it, for such a large flag, because it will be heavier, and if not done right could couse the flag to get damaged. I suggest making a similer kind of header that is currently on the left side of the flag (from where you are hanging it now), in red material of course, and then putting in grommets along it at perhaps 3 ft apart from eachother.

An alternative to american_flag_uk's suggestion is to sew one inch wide cloth tabs along the back side of the top edge of the flag at two foot spacing, with each tab holding a brass "D" ring. Then you can secure the flag using these D rings however you see fit. Or you could just staple the flag to the wall, but the stress on the staple holes may be too much for the fabric to take and it will rip.
