Default Military Funeral

About five years ago I started going to Military funerals in my area to support those who gave their lives for our freedom. I always stand on the side of the road that leads to the cemetary holding my fathers folded flag that was given to our family at his funeral twenty three years ago. (He retired from the USAF forty five years ago a Major). Last week as I was waiting for the funeral procession to pass by I started thinking: Is it appropriate to carry my fathers folded flag in support of those who gave their live for their country?

I don't know that there is anything in flag etiquette that says you shouldn't do that, Falcon70. And since you are doing it out of respect for the fallen service member, I don't see a problem with it. As an Air Force vet myself, let me thank you for supporting those lost in service of our country.

Falcon70: I have to agree with Moose135. As a member of the AF Reserve Honor Guard, I know of nothing in the Flag Code that says this is not appropriate. I would have to say that I have never seen this done at a funeral that I have participated in. I also agree that given the reason that you are doing it makes it honorable. If it were me, I would just come and salute as the hearse goes by. In the military this is a sign of respect, if not to the individual, at least to the rank. In your case, you are honoring their service, and I for one would take that as a "Thank you" which is all any Veteran really desires. "Thank you" for your show of thanks and recognizing the sacrifices made by our troops on our behalf.
I know you posted this in JUL but I just joined today.
