My grandson graduated from High School a year ago. When they played the National Anthem I was ashamed as to the number of people who did not standup, stand at attention, face the flag, men who did not take their caps off, women who left their hats on or did not place their right hand over their heart. Al least 1/3 of the people did one or more of the above. A Muslin family who had a daughter that was graduating with Honors, the parents and several children and not one of them including the daughter stood up. Sorry guys this did not sit well with me. I am a veteran and I faced our flag and saluted. A man next to me asked, "Who did I think I was saluting the flag and not being in the service." I was 66 years of age at that time. I waited until the National Anthem was finished and turned towards the man and quietly informed him that all veterans are authorized by Congress to salute the flag. The principal of the school did not do anything... (So much for political correctness). I thought that he should have stopped the National Anthem and inform everyone as to the correctness of respecting our flag. The graduation class was a large group with their parents, grandparents, friends and relatives there was 4,000 or more at Trey's graduation. Does not say much for our school systems. After the graduation was over we were walking thru the parking lots to get to our vehicles and I spotted a young Marine in Full Dress Uniform with his Parents, Grandparents, a person who graduated and numerous others with him. I went over and asked him if I could have the honor of shaking his hand...he extended it towards and as we shook hands I thanked him for serving our country. His mother started to cry...I just turned around and left. That was a great honor for me to recognize a member of our Armed Forces. Just an old man rambling. Thanks for reading this!
