Hello, all,

Today (April 1st 2007) is the anniversary of the establishment of the Canadian Territory of Nunavut. Nunavut was created in 1999 from the eastern part of the Northwest Territories, and is the home of the Inuit people.

The flag of Nunavut was created at the same time as the territory. It features a red "inuksuk", a traditional stone monument that is used as a way-marker, and a blue star symbolizing the North Star. The star is unusual in that it is positioned with the upper point at an angle rather than straight up.

We're flying the Nunavut flag on our house today (see photo). "Happy Birthday" to all our friends "up north!"

im interested to know Peter- how many flags have you got alltogether in your collection??

I haven't counted them in a while, but I'd guess about 100. Most of them are standard national and US state flags. I have a few unusual regional flags, such as those of Galicia, Spain and Brittany, France. I have also some historical flags -- US 13, 15 and 48 star flags, British pre-1801 Union Flag and Red Ensign, a "Gadsden Flag," two versions of the Irish "Plough and Stars" flag, and several others. There are also the Vancouver Island Colony flag and the Irish "Four Kingdoms" flag, which are not exactly historical, but interesting.

I keep a spreadsheet of countries' national days, and fly the flag on the appropriate day. In between, I try to come up with interesting or meaningful combinations. For example, on the cold winter days I fly flags of warm, sunny places. Today I have a display of different flags with the British union canton -- Tuvalu, Hawaii and Vancouver Island.
