Default parade flag etiquitte

I was recently in a Centennial parade and was told that only one American flag should be carried in the parade in front and to the right. I noticed that many groups were carring American flag including my group (mounted horses), and the Boy Scouts. What is the proper way, were we correct to carry the American flag? We did display front right of our group.

Welcome, Hollys!

There is no rule about carrying more than one American flag -- you can carry as many as you want to.

The person you spoke to was probably referring to the custom that's used when the American flag is carried along with other flags (other nations, states, military units, organizations, etc.). In that case, the American flag should either be in front of the other flags, or (if the flags are all in a row perpendicular to the line of march), to the right of all the other flags.
