    Hi!

what about a pledge allegiance to a flag patch?

The flag code says that the pledge "should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag," which implies that there's supposed to be a flag present to pledge to. Normally, this means a real cloth flag. However, one could imagine an unusual situation (for example, a prisoner-of-war scenario) in which the only flag available was a patch. If people in such a situation wanted to affirm their patriotism by saluting the flag patch, it's hard to see anything wrong with that.

Remember, the flag is just a symbol. The important things are "the republic for which it stands," and the values that the nation is based on. A flag patch can symbolize those things just as well as a "real" flag.

    Best,

    Thank you for the reply
The reason I asked - Boy scout troop

they had the CC come to the center of the room, every one (Pledge allegiance to the Flag patch) that was on her uniform.

The week before that, it was a Cub Scout getting ready to cross over was called to the center of the room.

Your right - guess a flag patch can symbolize those things just as well as a "real" flag

it just seams wrong – when you know the troop does have REAL - flags

    Thank you

I agree -- It was kind of silly to do it that way, when real flags are so easy to get!
