Default Proper Etiquette to Salute a State Flag

    Hello,

I would like to know what the proper or official way to salute a state flag. I have seen people salute our state flag in many ways from hand over heart, to a two finger salute, to the arm out and palm up. One of the original members of the group that wrote and presented our flag salute to the state legislature for its official adoption has expressed that the hand should be over the heart when saluting our state flag. I agree. Is there an official protocol to this?

    Thank you

Greetings, NMFlag and welcome to the USA-Flag-Site Forums !!!

QUOTE : "I would like to know what the proper or official way to salute a state flag."

I am NO expert about it, but this is the first time in my life that I have ever heard about anyone saluting a STATE flag.

Having said that, I want to "back up" my claim about NOT being an expert on the subject by letting you know that I live in Oregon and I've only been in five other States of the Union, AND I've never once checked any of their state flag saluting regulations!

In my NON-expert opinion, I suppose one could salute their State's flag if they really wanted to. And if they did, I suppose they would do it in the same manner as they would salute the National Flag. Although I don't know if it would be altogether fitting and proper for someone in the uniform of one of our NATION's armed services to salute a STATE flag.

Here's hoping that some of our MORE educated & learned members (REAL Experts!) will weigh in on this subject !!!

Thank You for bringing your Flag-related question to our Forums !!!
