the front with the stripes trailing aft. Another pilot tells me that I am
displaying the flag improperly on the starboard side as it is the reverse
of your rule of flag etiquette for flat display as quoted below.

However, the example I used before buying and applying the decals to my
plane is our own Air Force One 747, which has the flag displayed on the
tail in the same manner as I do. See

starboard side of Air Force One.

We have lunch bet on this one (as well as a possible peeling of decals and
repainting of the tail of my aircraft).

Best regards,

Jeff Scott

Other than being Flown from a Staff
The flag should be displayed flat, whether indoors or out. When displayed
either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be
uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to the observer's
left. When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way,
that is with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the
street. When festoons, rosettes or drapings are desired, bunting of blue,
white and red should be used, but never the flag.

Jeff Scott,

You are correct. A person looking at the aircraft tail from either side should see the field to their left (the flag's right). While the two flags do not match (from one side to the other) they do present the flags to observers in the proper fashion, according to code. Enjoy your lunch.

Displaying the American flag is a patriotic intention.
We should not assume that there is only ONE specific way to display our flag.
Consider a flag properly affixed to a flag poll. On a perfectly calm day, (no wind at all), the flag will furrow or hang apparently lifeless. I say “apparently” because the American flag is far from lifeless, but alive and FREE. When the wind blows, that same flag is viewable in all its glory, from BOTH sides. It is a matter of perspective. This is also true for a flag or sticker baring the likeness of the flag affixed to aircraft or other moving vehicles. The intention is to display the flag as if where being “flown” in a traditional manner. This is why almost all US air carriers (airlines) display the flag on the right hand (starboard) side of the airplane in an opposite perspective. It looks as if the flag is “traveling” through the air supported properly by the field side. Air Force One is another example of this. Remember, no other marking or flag should be displayed in a higher position than the flag of the USA. GOD Bless America.

Default Displaying flag on aircraft or vehicles

This question comes up from time to time. When the American flag is displayed on a vehicle such as an aircraft tail, it should be positioned with the field in the direction of forward movement. If you look at the flag emblem on military uniforms, when worn on the right sleeve, it is mounted as if flying on a staff with the feild to the front.

I guess your opinion of the forum would depend on whether you thought the questions / answers were useful and interesting. I am always eager to share what little knowledge I have gained through collecting antique flags for nearly 40 years now, so I am enjoying the opportunity to answer questions. What is your interest in flags?

Is there a correct answer to this question or is it up to an individuals discretion? The flag code says that the union should always be in the flags own right, but on aircrafts and other vehicles it is put so that the union appears to be flying as it normally would (the union goes to the flags left).

Whether placed on an aircraft tail, or sewn onto a soldier's uniform, the canton always is toward the front regardless of whether it is on the right or left side of the person or object is is displayed on. The choice is not discretionary.
