What is acceptable changes over time. It was once thought organ transplants were a desecration of the donor body. Not so, any more. Respectfully removing flag stars for a personal tribute is the same thing. I have personally witnessed the gratitude of those receiving this this small token of appreciation. The flag remains are treating respectfully just as a human body would be.
