| Paul: My apologies. I knew that I should have added "still afloat" in honor of Nelson's flagship. Peter: The flag was transferred from the Charlestown Navy Yard to the US Navy Yard Museum in Washington, DC. It was later exchanged with a number of other items to a third party who had donated items the Navy Museum wanted. Tom Carrier obtained the Royal Ensign directly from that "third party" by trade or purchase, I forget which. Then I obtained it from Tom via trade. The heading is marked with the Boston flagmaker's name, and I subsequently obtained a letter from them stating that the flag they made was for use on Old Ironsides for the Queen's visit. Nick

| There was a story in the news last Fall that the British Ministry of Defence was considering transferring HMS Victory to private ownership as a cost-cutting measure. Needless to say, this idea was not very popular with the public. One odd aspect of the story was that an MoD spokesperson was quoted as saying that whatever happened, Victory would remain a commissioned warship. I'm not exactly sure how that would be possible . . . Peter Ansoff
