| The Grand Union flag ("Continental" or "Congress" Colors), is considered to be the first flag of the United States, and was first raised by the Continental Army of Boston in 1776. A blue field in the upper left-hand corner bore a combination of the red cross of St. George (of England), and the white cross of St. Andrew (of Scotland). The design consisted of 13 alternate red and white stripes, which represented , of course, the original thirteen colonies. It was used during the American Revolution, and was first flown by the Colonial Fleet. It was the colonies' unofficial national flag on July 4, 1776, Independence Day; and it remained so until June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress authorized a new design bearing the Stars and Stripes.
