    Hello, Brownies! Thanks for asking.

A flag that is not flown regularly should be stored folded in the traditional triangle shape. You can buy triangle-shaped storage covers made of vinyl or acid-free paperboard to keep dust, mildew and insects away from your flag.

Flags should always be stored in a cool, dry place that is dark, or at least doesn't get any direct sunlight. You wouldn't want the outside part of your flag to fade while the inside stayed brightly colored.

Sarah, I work at the beautiful Bahia Resort Hotel in San Diego and we employ a lot of veterans, including me. We have come together to get the final word on storage of the American flag while not in use.

Our huge flag goes up and down everyday. Our question is, whnen it comes down, how should it be folded? In what container should it be stored?, etc...

unfortunatly Sarah doesn't seem to come on this site anymore but you can have me instead lol
by HUGE flag - you mean a flag larger than 5x95?? like 10x19 or something like that?

youd have to have a few more people at the flagpole when the flag is being lowered but ou can still fold larger flags into the triangle shape which im sure your veterans will know how to do!
you can fold ength ways 3 times before starting the triangles - just fold the 1st two normally till the stars are on both sides of the flag and just fold over again then do triangles as normal

storage obviousy no regular display case will fit this flag so you could store it in a suitable box that it would fit into
presumably your a company so youd fly the flag most days anyway right?

heres vid from my aechive on youtube showing a larger flag being folded- at a guess d sy the flag is 10x15 ft
they have folded length ways 3 times

Greetings! Apparently, Sarah and the other administrators are not answering posts here anymore. A few of us late-comers are filling in when we can.

whnen [the flag] comes down, how should it be folded?

There is no hard-and-fast rule about this. The tradition is to fold it in the triangular "cocked hat" shape, but there's no reason why it shouldn't be done some other way, particularly if the folders are not familiar with the process or the folded flag would be awkward to store.

The origin of the "cocked hat" folding process is a bit of a mystery. It seems to have originated in the US Army in the 1920s or 30s. My guess is that it was simply a way that a small number of soldiers could fold a large flag while keeping it off the ground.

In what container should it be stored?, etc...

Again, there are no hard-and-fast rules, other than common sense. Obviously, it should be stored where it won't get dirty, wet or crumpled.

Hope all is well in SD. I always enjoy visiting there -- my folks live up near MCAS Miramar.

    Best regards,

wow vey nice!! why on earth is it shut away in a cupboard ?? why is it not on display or at least a place where you can see it? seems a shame to have a nice flag stuck in a cupboard

if it is an unwanted flag it can have a good home here with me and the rest of my flags! just put it up on ebay and send me a link!
