Great question! The stripes on the flag are believed to have been based on the Washington Family coat-of-arms, which consisted of a white shield containing three red stars and under them, two red stripes.
In 1977, the Second Continental Congress passed the Flag Resolution which stated: "Resolved, That the flag of the United States be made of thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation." I guess that design must've been a hit!

The Bremen flag.
This flag has its origin in the middle ages. The red and white stripes symbolize the liberty of the citizens of Bremen. It is told that the American flag is modeled on this flag.
