    Default Taps at flag retirement

Hello I am brand new to the board. I work with scouts and we would like to have a flag retirement ceremony. There are lots of websites with instructions and suggestions. Just want to make sure we have the correct set of specific step by step instructions, including what to say and when to say it.

We have a troop bugler who plays Taps very well. Is that appropriate to have him play, and when?

Thanks for your help. We really want to do a good job with this.

hey Millran2: Sorry, something happened that took me completely out of what I was doing.
The reference on history of Taps:
Twenty Four Notes That Tap Deep Emotions
The Story of America's most famous bugle call
by Jari Villanueva, a musician and historian and has sounded Taps at least 1600 times at Arlington National Cemetery and a member of the USAF Band.
For information visit Taps Bugler: Jari Villanueva. Great resource.

Millran2: YOu probably got none of the rest of my message. The short response is yes. Do it last, nothing afterwards, if a campfire end it after Taps. Maybe give a history of Taps and a history of the flag.
I, too, am a Scouter and I am amazed at how little people know.
I teach flag etiquette at our University of Scouting.
Remember the Flag Code only says "in a simple and dignified manner". I cannot think of a more dignified manner than playing Taps at your disposal.
I might mention that I don''t believe in cutting up the flag, you will find that some think this is appropriate so that everyone has something to put in the fire. Not my personal choice. Nothing in the flag code says you can't then again it all depends on how you translate "in a simple and dignified manner".
